Many times our customers ask us what they should use to protect their computer investment. Anit-Virus, Anti-Spam, Anti-Malware, System Restore, System Optimization, Data Backup...it is all very confusing! What should you use, what is the cost, and what will protect you best, especially when online???

If you are looking for something that you can install and forget and a product that automatically protects you, the straightforward fact is you are really looking for a paid or subscription product. We are not necessarily recommending one product over another for these paid or subscription products, but examples of some software include AVG, Norton/Symantec, McAfee, Avast, and Trend Micro just to name a few.

If you are interested in COMPLETELY FEEsoftware, be aware that these will require work on your part to to run them regularly (they will not run automatically), as well as requiring you to click a few buttons when you are alerted of an update. We like 4 programs that are fairly easy to use and require little time to run.

  • ANTIVIRUS - Use AVG Free from AVG Technologies to stop viruses from entering your computer via software downloads, web searches, file transfers/sharing and email. Once installed this software will protect you on your email, online web browsing, file sharing and more. The system will run automatically after it is set up and alert you when it needs updating.

  • REMOVAL OF MALICIOUS SOFTWARE - Use Malwarebytes from Malwarebytes Corporation. It removes all forms of malware, including viruses, Trojans, spyware, adware and rootkits that get into your computer system when you are on the web, downloading email, installing programs or pretty much doing anything. At minimum run this once a month, but preferably once a week.

  • REMOVE JUNK & TEMPORARY FILES (PC & MAC) - Use C-Cleaner from Piriform Ltd. It removes files that take up space and slow down your computer, especially those temporary files and cookies that are placed on your machine when you are browsing the web. At minimum run this once a month, but preferably once a week.

  • SPEED UP YOUR SYSTEM (PC) - Use Defraggler from Piriform Ltd. It reorganizes your hard drive so that your operating system does not have to jump all over your hard drive to load files. This really does not have to be run more than once a month at most and that is if you add and delete a lot of programs regularly, even those downloaded games or programs from the web. If not run it 3 to 4 times a year.

The final recommendation is the use of a backup system. You could purchase an automated online backup subscription service OR for a less expensive long-term option you can purchase a backup drive that plugs into a USB port for $39 to $100 at most stores that carry computer products (Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Best Buy, etc.). The biggest benefit to an online system is that it provides more security in the event of a natural disaster or fire. It is true that in both cases there is no free option, but if you have a system crash the cost of either is very minor in comparison to just the time necessary to replace pictures, videos, work documents, email addresses, etc.
